On the eve of the 16th anniversary of the crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Beijing, Amnesty International calls for justice for those who lost their lives on 3-4 June, 1989. The organisation also calls for the release of those imprisoned in 1989 or jailed since for seeking a reassessment of events at Tiananmen.

(Brussels 4 May, 2004) In a report released in Brussels only days after the EU’s historic enlargement, Amnesty International has turned the spotlight on human rights issues in psychiatric hospitals in Romania, which is a candidate for the next wave of EU expansion.
Amnesty International is issuing an urgent appeal to European Union leaders to exert their influence through the Cotonou Agreement, following the arrest yesterday of the head of Amnesty International in Gambia, Mr Lamine Sillah, and 13 others including a leading member of Gambia’s opposition Dr Moudou Manneh.
