The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states. An important human rights actor, both within Europe and globally, the EU is built on shared goals and values, laid out in the Lisbon Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Amnesty International advocates the EU bodies and institutions to ensure that the EU and its member states put human rights at the heart of their policies. We provide information on human rights abuses and offer analysis and recommendations on how the EU and its member states should respond.

The European Institutions Office (EIO) undertakes advocacy activities to develop and strengthen Amnesty’s relationships with EU representatives and decision makers.

Our advocates work in close partnership with a range of human rights organisations active at EU level, often taking a leading role in coalitions, alliances, and working groups.

As EU member states are vital decision makers, we work closely with Amnesty International’s national groups in Europe who advocated to their member state governments.

The European Institutions Office (EIO) has five EU Advocates, covering the following thematic areas:

Our office contributes to Amnesty International’s global campaigns, which seek to engage as many people as possible in promoting respect for people’s rights and freedoms.
