Today the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland have seen that failing to do their bit for people fleeing for their lives has consequences

This vicious and calculated assault on the rights to freedom of expression and association is a serious miscalculation and contravenes Hungary’s human rights obligations. It must be challenged on all levels – from grassroots organisations in Hungary to the European Union in Brussels.

Next week, on 14 June, the EU’s executive arm has yet another opportunity to deliver justice and put right some the many ways in which the Roma in Italy have been wronged.

The EU must show its support for all of those human rights defenders, lawyers and others who peacefully exercise their rights in China

We will be out in force to send a clear message that we reject his policies of hatred and fear.

23/05/2017 – Amnesty International is deeply concerned that Italian authorities may be attempting to circumvent their obligation to protect people fleeing widespread and systematic human rights violations and abuses in Libya by facilitating the interception of refugees and migrant boats by Libyan authorities in the central Mediterranean.

Today the European Parliament marked out a clear red line on the protection of rights, which European governments simply cannot cross.

European ministers’ response to the Polish government’s attacks on fundamental rights was inadequate, given the gravity of the situation. While it is a relief to finally see member states challenging a member of their own club on its deteriorating rights record, they nonetheless fundamentally failed to back up their words with any action.

Attacks and smear campaigns against human rights activists are happening the world over, and Europe is no exception. The EU and its member countries need to take action to stop this – both at home and abroad

15/05/2017 – On 16 May, the General Affairs Council is set to debate the situation in Poland upon request from the European Commission. We are writing to call on you to act to protect the rule of law and human rights in Poland. Despite repeated warnings by the European Commission, the Council of Europe’s Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), other international bodies and civil society organisations, the Polish government has continued on its course of undermining the rule of law, tightening its grip on media and backsliding on human rights protection. These actions violate the EU’s founding principles as enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU). We therefore urge you to resort to the procedure laid down in Article 7 TEU and ensure Poland respects the principles on which the EU is founded.
