25/06/2008 – Amnesty International calls on the EU Presidency to ensure that the issues discussed at the recent EU-Russia Human Rights Consultations are also raised at the highest level during the EU-Russia Summit, mainly the right to freedom of expression and the human rights situation in the North Caucasus. The EU should urge President Medvedev to reaffirm his commitment, upon becoming president of the Russian Federation, that human rights and freedoms will be honoured and protected.
16/06/2008 – AI writes to the Slovenian Presidency, ahead of the EU-South Africa Troika, drawing attention to the need for discussion of the South African government response to the violent attacks that have taken place in South Africa recently, on the basis of the victims’ perceived ethnic origins or status as ‘foreigners’ or asylum seekers. The letter also calls for the EU to prioritise preparations for the UN High Level meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York on 10-11 June.
