The awarding of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is a significant acknowledgement of the work of Hu Jia, said Amnesty International as the prize was announced  by the European Parliament.

15/03/2006 – Ahead of presidential elections in Belarus scheduled for 19 March 2006, the authorities are delivering another assault on human rights. Opposition activists are being detained and sentenced for the legitimate expression of their political views while the authorities have tightened up legislation to clamp down on civil society, stifling human rights in the process.

30/09/2005 – Amnesty International releases today new findings that show there is no end to the serious human rights violations in the North Caucasus. What the Russian government describes as its “war on terror” in this region is being used as a pretext for violations that include “disappearances”, torture, arbitrary detention and incommunicado detention in unacknowledged as well as official places of detention.
