26/11/2014 – Amnesty International explores how the Victims and Land Restitution Law (Law 1448), implemented in 2012, is failing the vast majority of people whose lands were stolen. Many have been unable to return home due to ongoing threats of violence and the slowness of the restitution process.
03/11/2014 – Amnesty International calls on the European Union (EU) and its member states to place human rights at the centre of exchanges during the forthcoming visit of Colombia’s President, Juan Manuel Santos.
30/10/2014 – Amnesty International welcomed the decision today from the Court of Appeal in London in the case of Abdul-Hakim Belhaj and Fatima Boudchar v Straw and Ors in which the Court permitted the Belhaj lawsuit to proceed. Amnesty International had intervened in the case, jointly with the International Commission of Jurists, JUSTICE, and REDRESS.
The EU must step up and strengthen its standards on hate crime. This is key to ensuring that any discriminatory motive is duly taken into account across the whole of the EU.
17/07/2014 – The United States (US) government’s callous and dehumanising practice of holding prisoners in prolonged solitary confinement in the country’s only federal super-maximum security (supermax) prison amounts to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and is in violation of international law.
03/04/2014 – The US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) has voted for a degree of transparency on the now long-festering injustices associated with the secret detention program operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after the attacks of 11 September 2001.
27/03/2014 – 2013 was marked by some challenging setbacks on the journey to abolition of the death penalty. Four countries – Indonesia, Kuwait, Nigeria and Viet Nam – resumed executions and there was a significant rise in the number of people executed during the year compared with 2012, driven primarily by increases in Iraq and Iran.
26/03/2014 – At today’s Summit, the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (US) must put human rights at the centre of their dialogue and action. The EU-US summit represents a crucial opportunity for both sides to explicitly address several key issues of cooperation in relation to their human rights records.
