This isn’t migration management; it’s an erosion of humanity.
These images give a deeper sense of the speed and scale of Hungary’s operation to seal its borders, which culminated in a dire situation for refugees and asylum-seekers left in limbo.
The Serbian authorities and the European Union knew this was going to happen and yet failed to respond adequately, meaning hundreds of the most vulnerable people are now stuck between razor wire and the abyss of not knowing what comes next.
In the glaring absence of sufficient safe and legal routes to Europe, people are left with little choice but to embark on irregular journeys fraught with risks either in the Mediterranean or now increasingly the western Balkans. It’s time to show the red card to Europe’s response to the refugee crisis and ensure an urgent rethink.
With the peak summer crossing months now upon us, European governments can’t falter in their pledges to prevent more tragedies at sea.
The EU-China Summit offers a crucial opportunity to put human rights at the top of discussions, and move forwards with clear action.
