Colombia: Amnesty International Briefing to the European Union

In the lead-up to Thursday’s meeting on International Support for Colombia, in which the European Commission, and representatives of EU Member States will participate, Amnesty International has called on the EU to guarantee that any further aid to Colombia will not be diverted to activities or groups which may contribute to the worsening human rights crisis in the country.

The Justice and Home Affairs Council of 5-6 June 2003 is due to approve the EU-US Agreements on Extradition and on Mutual Legal Assistance, Amnesty International releases its own analysis which points to serious concerns and omissions.

Amnesty International has today released a Memorandum to the European Union and EU member states (available see 1 & 2 at end of page) calling for the EU’s urgent attention to the plight of human rights defenders, during a series of meetings with Latin American and Caribbean ministers this week.
