PRESS CONFERENCE – “Iraqi Refugee Crisis: Time For EU to Show Solidarity”

Ahead of the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 19-20 April and on the occasion of a major UNHCR conference on Iraq on 17-18 April in Geneva, Amnesty International and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) invite you to attend a press conference to discuss the EU’s role in adressing the ongoing crisis faced by Iraqis refugees and its repercussions for the region and Europe.

The conference will count with the presence of an Iraqi refugee currently living in the United Kingdom. She will highlight her personal experiences and describe the current situation in Syria, where she has relatives. Individual interviews will be possible at the end of the conference.

Amnesty International’s researcher on Iraq will describe the findings of a recent mission to Jordan where an estimated one million refugees are living in difficult conditions and at risk of deportation. The organization will make the case for urgent EU assistance and a generous resettlement policy.

ECRE will present guidelines aimed at making EU and Member State policies more coherent, consistent with international standards, and genuinely supportive of countries in the region. In particular, means to end the current “protection lottery” that Iraqi asylum seekers are faced with when they enter Europe.
