Legislation affecting the Roma community in Italy
15/05/2009 – The so called “security package” draft law (ddl 2180/09) was voted this week in the Italian Chamber of Deputies. Although it would still require approval by the Italian Senate, Amnesty International is concerned about the compatibility of certain provisions of this draft national legislation with international human rights standards and European law, including the Race Directive 2000/43/EC. This draft law would heavily affect the rights of migrants and asylum seekers and would introduce provisions which appear to be discriminatory, affecting disproportionately the Roma and Sinti communities.
