Amnesty International calls on the European Union to increase pressure on Myanmar
Amnesty International’s EU Office encourages the European Union to continue putting pressure on Myanmar to put a stop to human rights violations in the country.
Specifically, we call on the EU to:
- Ensure that the EU Arms Embargo to Myanmar is strictly imposed, and to build on this by supporting a mandatory and comprehensive United Nations Security Council arms embargo;
- Continue to press the UN Human Rights Council to demand an immediate halt to the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations and for a visit by the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar;
- Urge neighbouring countries, in particular, China and ASEAN countries, to exert all possible pressure to end the violent repression.
