Italy slated by ECHR on refugees

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
PRESS QUOTE

(Brussels, 23 February) "The European Court of Human Rights has today delivered a historic judgement on the case of Hirsi Jamaa and Others v Italy",  said Nicolas Beger, Director of Amnesty International's European Institutions Office.

"The judgement, concerning  the Italian interception and push-back to Libya of refugees and asylum-seekers in 2009, clearly establishes that Italy was obliged to protect the Somalis and Eritreans on the intercepted boat and that it had full knowledge of the dire fate they would suffer by returning them to Libya.”
