EU leaders must press Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to tackle Egypt’s human rights crisis and end the unrelenting assault on human rights defenders when they meet on the sidelines of the European Union – African Union (EU-AU) summit, Amnesty International said today ahead of the event this week.
In light of Egypt’s alarming record of severe human rights violations, often “justified” in the name of counter-terrorism, the undersigned civil society organizations are appalled at the European Union’s determination to pursue chairing the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) with Egypt, and urge the EU to seriously reconsider and ultimately withdraw the bid.

In light of the deteriorating human rights situation in the country, the organizations urge the EU and its member states to fundamentally revise their strategy toward relations with India and engage with India on human rights.
