EU-Brazil Summit – People must be at the heart of discussions
02/09/2009 – Letter and report on “The US Embargo against Cuba: its Impact on Economic and Social Rights” to Commissioners Karel De Gucht and Benito Ferrero-Waldner
08/05/2009 – The EU-Cuba Troika on 11 May 2009 will take place almost a year after the political dialogue which recommenced between the EU and Cuba, following the lifting of EU measures against Cuba in June 2008. It is important that this meeting sends a strong signal that the EU remains committed about putting human rights at the centre of this dialogue.
01/04/2009 – The summit meeting between the USA and EU member states on 5 April 2009 is a historic event. It is historic because it marks the EU‟s first formal discussion with the new US administration, and also because it offers the opportunity to mark a step change in EU-US co-operation. It provides the opportunity to begin to draw to a close the dark chapter of abusive practices, involving states on both sides of the Atlantic, used to combat terrorism, and to open a new chapter in global relations, with both the EU and the USA in a position to show responsible leadership in tackling human rights issues of mutual concern.
24/02/2009 – Ahead of the discussions of the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council next week on how to help the US close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, this is a letter from an international coalition of non-governmental organisations actively involved in advocacy and litigation on the closure of Guantanamo.
Amnesty International welcomes President Obama’s first act in office: the call for a temporary halt and review of all military tribunals. This is an important signal of recognition by the new US administration that trials taking place under the Military Commissions Act are deeply flawed and fall far short of international fair trial standards.
