Event: Human rights here, Roma rights now!
Launch of campaign to end discrimination against Roma in Europe
Date: 8 April 2013
Time: 1.00 pm
Place: In front of the European Parliament, Esplanade Solidarność (north), Brussels
Watch out for Amnesty International’s flashmob outside the European Parliament! This marks the launch of our campaign to end discrimination against Roma people in Europe. Visit our Roma village and photo exhibition to see how some Roma people in EU countries really live.
There are some 6m Roma people who live in EU countries. They experience constant discrimination in all aspects of their lives. This means it can be hard or even impossible for them to get a home, education, health care or a job. On top of that, existing EU anti-discrimination laws are often ignored, which means many Roma communities are trapped in a cycle of exclusion.
Amnesty International will bring Roma activists and an entire Roma village to the European Parliament to press the Union to do more to defend their rights.
Photo and interview opportunities:
Roma activists, MEPs and Amnesty International’s Director of its European Institutions Office will be available for interview.
