Big gaps in EU human rights protection

23/05/2013Today sees the launch of Amnesty International’s global annual report which charts the state of human rights worldwide. It reveals a range of policies in EU countries which expose migrants and minorities to human rights violations.

Why EU must protect human rights during financial crisis

03/05/2013On 5 May the Optional Protocol for the International Covenant of Economic Social & Cultural Rights comes into effect. This will allow people to seek justice from the United Nations if their rights (which include adequate housing, food, water, sanitation, health, work, social security and education) are violated and their government fails to provide redress. In the context of the current financial crisis, Amnesty International has expressed the belief that it is of paramount importance that all European Union member states sign and ratify the Protocol and belatedly begin to consider the human rights impact of austerity measures.

18/01/2013As Ireland assumes the six-monthly rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, Amnesty International has today delivered its Recommendations to the Irish EU presidency to Eamon Gilmore, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade. The organisation has tasked the Irish presidency with strengthening human rights inside the EU.

EU to support UN call to end female genital mutilation

19/12/2012European countries are expected to join the UN call for intensified efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM), a human rights violation which affects 8,000 girls daily. The resolution to be adopted at the General Assembly tomorrow is the first of its kind, and is an important step in global efforts to tackle this human rights issue.
