20/02/2013In the light of the European Commission’s recent commitment to prevent female genital mutilation, Amnesty International’s END FGM European Campaign is devoting a day (27 February) to exploring practical ways of ending this human rights violation. It will unveil four artistic creations which envisage Europe, once women and girls are finally free from the clutches of this harmful practice.

EU to support UN call to end female genital mutilation

19/12/2012European countries are expected to join the UN call for intensified efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM), a human rights violation which affects 8,000 girls daily. The resolution to be adopted at the General Assembly tomorrow is the first of its kind, and is an important step in global efforts to tackle this human rights issue.

18/07/2012Following the European Commission’s declaration that 2013 will be the year of Europe’s people and their rights, Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding launched an online consultation on the obstacles people face in trying to exercise their rights. Amnesty International has criticised the absence of any reference to violations of key fundamental rights, and has released a summer petition for signature, which aims to press Mrs Reding to strengthen the role of human rights.
