Joint NGO statement: DROI hearing on torture guidelines

With the imminent hearing on 21 June by the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights on the Guidelines to European Union (EU) policy towards third countries on torture, and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (hereafter ’torture and ill-treatment‘ and ’Torture Guidelines‘), we are sending our views on the Torture Guidelines as updated on 15 March this year.

On 3 April, in Chisinau, Amnesty International will launch the briefing Unfinished Business: Combating Torture and Ill-treatment in Moldova. The briefing updates previous reports we have produced on torture and other ill-treatment in Moldova, and examines actions by the Moldovan authorities to address human rights violations committed by police in April 2009 following the election demonstrations.

Militias threaten hopes for new Libya

16/02/2012This report details widespread and serious abuses, including war crimes, mostly carried out by militias targeting suspected al-Gaddafi loyalists. There are cases of people being unlawfully detained and tortured, sometimes to death. These militia groups are largely out of control and able to commit crimes with impunity.
