05/12/2012Amnesty International is inviting all the EU institutions and agencies involved in implementing the Stockholm Programme to do more than carry out a formal review of what activities were carried out and to revisit their action (or inaction) critically, in line with the ‚tools‛ (for good implementation) promoted by the Stockholm Programme three years ago. These tools include ‚objective and impartial evaluation of the implementation of the policies‛, ‚evaluation of the effectiveness of the legal instruments‛, including to ‚determine any obstacles to the proper functioning‛ of the different areas covered, as well as ‚open, transparent and regular dialogue with representative associations and civil society‛.
05/12/2012At the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting tomorrow, the Cyprus presidency is expected to contribute to the mid-term review of implementation of the Stockholm Programme, the five-year programme defining the EU’s priorities in freedom, security and justice, by submitting a progress assessment.

There’s no shortage of EU laws or powers to defend human rights. The problem is a desperate lack of political will-power. All of us deserve to live safe from human rights violations so we can enjoy our rights free from fear and pointless constraints. We want the Commission to use its existing powers boldly to tackle today’s defects and make a tangible difference for human rights in Europe.
