On International Human Rights Day, India and the EU meet in Brussels to further build on their strategic partnership. We recall the need to place the promotion and protection of human rights at the centre of all policies and cooperation. With this letter, we highlight specific issues requiring attention at the Summit and beyond: tackling discrimination, ensuring human rights are upheld in security and counter-terrorism operations, and the crucial role of India and the EU in advancing human rights in international fora.

As European and African leaders take stock of the Joint Africa EU Strategy at the Summit in Tripoli, we urge for increased consideration of human rights in all future cooperation efforts. We also urge both sides to do their utmost in addressing the peace and security situations on the African continent, in particular in Somalia and Sudan.
