Italy : 'Zero Tolerance for Roma'

29/11/2011Thousands of Roma in Italy live in camps located at the outskirts of urban areas, without access to most basic facilities. they face prejudice and hostility. Over the years, many human rights organizations have urged the Italian government to address this situation, end the discrimination experienced by Romani people and ensure respect of their human rights, including the right to adequate housing. This report recounts how the Italian authorities have turned their backs on these calls, and have treated Romani settlements as security threats.

Recommendations to the European Union During the Hungarian Presidency

04/01/2011The changes brought by the Lisbon Treaty have radically transformed the EU presidency’s task. It now focuses far more on internal affairs. So one of the main challenges confronting the Hungarian presidency on the human rights front will be something its predecessors were able to dodge by hiding behind laudable work on the external front. Europe’s human rights landscape has also been altered. Discrimination against minorities, and racism in law enforcement and criminal justice, have grown so much that they are too overwhelming for member states to tackle singlehandedly. In particular the situation of the Roma people and the grave violations they are facing throughout Europe, have spelt an end to the previous and all-too-convenient impasse EU presidencies have cited to allow them to avoid confronting the human rights situation in the EU.

Missed Opportunity - European Roma Platform Fails to Connect

14/12/2010The European Roma Policy Coalition (ERPC) is deeply disappointed that the agenda of the fourth meeting of the Integrated European Platform for Roma Inclusion has not been aligned with the process initiated by the European Commission to develop and adopt by April 2011 a European Framework for National Roma Inclusion Strategies. The main topic for the Platform – ‘early childhood education’ -‐ is an important issue. However, neither the agenda nor the preparations for the Platform have provided an opportunity to debate what is the most significant EU Roma policy process to date. The Platform has therefore missed the opportunity to act as a meaningful forum, which can make EU and Member States’ efforts to deliver results for Roma people more effective. This major omission raises grave concerns about the Platform’s value and functioning.

Stop forced evictions of Roma in Europe

07/04/2010Forced evictions are cruel, humiliating and in breach of international law. in europe, they happen all too often and affect those who are least able to resist. Romani people are one such easy target; they are poor, socially excluded, and treated with hostility by the public. this is why governments are able to forcibly evict them and show little regard for their human rights. it is time to end this injustice.
